Metal Fabricators manufacture, assemble, and install metal components and structures using various techniques including welding, cutting, shaping, and joining. They work across industries like construction, manufacturing, and engineering, producing everything from structural steelwork to bespoke metal products.

  • Apprentices must:

    • Complete a minimum of 36 months training on-programme

    • Achieve Level 2 English and Maths

    • Compile a portfolio of evidence demonstrating KSBs

    • Be confirmed ready by employer and training provider

    • Location: Real or simulated working environment approved by EPAO

    • Assessed by: Independent End-Point Assessor

    • Assesses: Fabrication techniques, safety, quality control, and interpretation of drawings

    • Follow-up Questions: 5–10 questions during or after the observation

    • Grading: Pass, Distinction, or Fail

  • The EPA has three components:

    1. Knowledge Test

      • Multiple choice and short-answer questions covering knowledge areas.

    2. Practical Observation with Questions

      • 4-hour observation of metal fabrication tasks (welding, cutting, assembling) in a real or simulated environment with assessor questioning.

    3. Professional Discussion (Underpinned by Portfolio)

      • 90-minute structured discussion with the Independent Assessor, focusing on work evidence and understanding of KSBs.
